As a rule of thumb, you can only do 1 or 2 things well. Some people are exceptional: they can do 3. I’m not exceptional.
- Commit/bullshit ratio
Everybody does some of it, but the key is ratio. Good engineers do little while pushing features most of the time. Less good engineers engage in a lot of “bullshit”, wasting their own time, and that of others’ who are pulled into reviews and battles.
William Langewiesche’s long form investigative articles rank among my all time favorite reads. Thus, it made me excited when I stumbled upon Call of the Void: Seven years on, what do we know about the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight 370? which is a deep dive into the events of 8th of March 2014 when flight MH370 disappeared with all 239 people on board.
